The Arax Chapter was established in South Bay of Los Angeles County on April 3, 1964, by a group of dedicated individuals. Hagop Manjikian, who has an esteemed intellectual career with numerous publications, suggested the name “Arax” to symbolize the mother river Arax in Armenia. The founding members of the chapter included: Anette Apelian, Alice Apelian, Christine Ashkarian, Astrid Ashkarian, Donnelly Boujikian, Knar Manjikian, Murielle Mgrdichian, Arpine Sapajian, and others.
The main aim of the chapter is to educate the new generation. School sessions are held on Friday afternoons and curriculum includes music and dancing, in addition to language and history instruction. The chapter shares school and office space at the Armenian community center in Lomita, near Torrance.
The chapter allocates funding to Public High School graduate scholarships. In an effort to introduce the Armenian cuisine to the American public, the chapter participates in the annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair. The chapter raises funds with breakfasts, luncheons and dinners, which occasionally include introduction of Armenian cultural values, such as the program dedicated to Armenian communities with historical significance.
