Legacy of Care for Women & Children in Akhourian, Armenia
The greater ARS family has had a long love affair with the ARS Mother & Child Clinic in Akhourian, which we helped found in 1997 as part of our efforts to help Armenia rebuild after the devastating earthquake on Dec. 7, 1988. Over the past 15 years, ARS Western USA has participated in the L.A. Marathon 5k run/walk to raise funds for humanitarian causes, including for the clinic, whose Armenian name is Mor oo Mangan.
Fast forward to #LAMarathon2025: This year, a new and younger generation of ARS members was in charge, naming the fund-raiser Run for Armenia and raising $41,000 to help underwrite the cost of a new mammogram machine for the Mother & Child Clinic.
Reporting from Akhourian via Zoom on the April 3 Appreciation Night for the Run for Armenia committee, Dr. Sevag Avakyan, clinic director, expressed thanks on behalf of his team of 65 employees and reported that they have had 22,565 births since the birthing center was opened in 2005, in addition to providing ongoing mammograms, pre-natal care, and birthing services to thousands of women for free. A big win for the ARS and for the future of Armenia!
